— Handled all external and internal communications for the Office of Public Safety and Emergency Management, which includes the Pitt Police Department, the Department of Environmental Health and Safety, the Department of Integrated Security and the Department of Emergency Management.

— Managed websites for all four departments.

— Wrote and posted stories and photos to support websites.

— Kept updated library of stock photography to support websites and marketing assets.

— Helped manage social media channels.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,

Breaking News Editor

September 2015 — February 2022

 

— Responsible for all content posted to Breaking News / This Just In portals at post-gazette.com.
— Job included collaborating with reporters and section editors; assigning, editing, researching, reporting, writing and fact-checking stories; assigning photos and/or graphics; and posting all content to the site, which receives more than a million visitors a month.

— Served as Sunday Local News Editor, a managerial position that oversees all newsroom operations on Sunday.
— Served as special projects and lead Sunday designer from March 2012 to September 2015.

— Was part of the team that won the Pulitzer Prize for breaking news coverage of the mass shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in 2018.

Cafe Racer Magazine,

Writer / Designer

2021 — Present

 

— Have written several full-length feature stories for a publication that focuses on a passionate segment of the motorcycle industry. 

— Redesigned magazine’s cover concept in 2022.

The Baltimore Sun,

Design Director for Print

September 2003 — February 2012

 

— Managed the design department of a daily newspaper with 100,000-plus daily circulation (220,000 Sunday).
— Duties included designing daily news and sports sections, Sunday front pages (bulldog and daily editions), and weekend features.

— Often responsible for handling The Sun’s special projects, which included finding ways to attract new readership. A particular project of note, which I designed, was a multi-part series researched and written by Fred Schulte and June Arney on a system of ground rents in Baltimore, which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in public service reporting.
— Regularly tasked with conceptualizing and executing illustrations for all sections of the newspaper.

Note:  Was hired as a designer in 2012 and elevated to my final position in 2010.
Awards at The Sun: Best of Show—Features Design, Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association (Old school comics, 2011); Award of Excellence, Society for News Design* (Cal Ripken, 2008); Award of Excellence, SND (Preakness coverage, shared, 2008); Award of Excellence, SND (What is taste?, 2007); First place, Page 1 Design for Division A (dailies over 75,000), MDDC (2005); Best of Show—Page 1 Design, MDDC (Katrina’s terrible impact, 2005).

 

* The Society for News Design’s (SND.org) annual contest is an international competition and is widely regarded to be the pre-eminent competition for designers in the news industry.

Savannah (Ga.) Morning News,

News Planner and Designer

March 2000 — August 2003

 

— Designed the front page and Coastal Empire (local section), which relied heavily on graphic design, typography and illustration.
— Completed several special projects, including a 24-page section just two days after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, and the four-part series “Justice Betrayed,” which was named Story of the Year by the Georgia Press Association (2003). In addition to designing the series, I also had a bylined contribution included in Part 3 of the series.

Awards at the Morning News: Won three Awards of Excellence by the Society for News Design.

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,

News Designer / Copy Editor

May 1998 — March 2000

 

— Besides regular mainsheet design and copy editing duties, designed the front page of the North Hills News Record, a suburban newspaper that ran as a zoned wrap for the Tribune-Review.

Notes: While in college, worked as a writer for four years in the Tribune-Review’s sports department.  I was hired as a full-time writer/designer before even graduating college.

USA Today,

October 1995 — February 1998

 

— During football seasons, provided daily reporting of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) for online coverage. Also provided some coverage during the Division I basketball season with a focus on Duquesne University and the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Editor in Chief

May 1997 — May 1998

 

— Designed the front page and editorial page; managed a 10-member editorial staff; immediately undertook a full redesign upon May 1997 hiring.

— Authored a stylebook to ensure consistency in content and presentation.
Awards at The Duke:
Best Non-Daily Collegiate Newspaper (Society of Professional Journalists); First place, Best Graphic (Pennsylvania Newspaper Association); First place, Best Photo Story (PNA); Second place, Best Front Page Design (PNA), Honorable Mention, Best Page Design (PNA); Best Collegiate Newspaper, (American Scholastic Press Association); First place, Best Front Page Design (ASPA); First place, Best Illustration (ASPA).

Notes: Served two stints as sports editor of The Duke, from November1994 to April 1995, and August 1996 to May 1997.
